When another old cave is discovered in the south of France, it is not usually news. Rather, it is an ordinary
event. Such discoveries are so frequent these days that hardly anybody pays heed to them.
However, when the Lascaux cave complex was discovered in 1940, the world was amazed. Painted directly on
its walls were hundreds of scenes showing how people lived thousands of years ago. The scenes show people
hunting animals, such as bison or wild cats. Other images depict birds and, most noticeably, horses, which appear
in more than 300 wall images, by far outnumbering all other animals.
Early artists drawing these animals accomplished a monumental and difficult task. They did not limit

Vietnamese sometime wonder how westerners can eat bread days after days but the vice-versa also holds
water. Most tourists coming to Vietnam are amazed at the omni-presence of rice and rice-related dishes.
Rice is an object for worshipping in many temples of Vietnam. It is said to originate from the Mother Godness

One of the greatest security threats in the online world is computer hacking. Hackers are people who illegally
enter systems. They may alter or delete information, steal private information, or spread viruses that can damage
or destroy files. But how exactly can a hacker get into a system to do these things?
Most hackers use information called protocols that are built into computer software. These protocols allow
computers to interact with one another. Protocols are sort of like computer police officers. When a computer
connects to another system, the protocols check to see if the access is valid. The protocols can also determine how
much information can be shared between the two systems. Hackers can manipulate the protocols to get unlimited
access to a computer system.
In fact, just the act of entering a computer network is commonly considered passive hacking. Passive hackers
get a rush from just being able to access a challenging system like a bank or military network. Another kind of
hacker tries to do damage to a system. After hacking into systems, these hackers release viruses or alter, delete, or
take information. Known as active hackers, they are the more dangerous of the two.
The easiest way to protect a system is with a good password. Long and unusual passwords are harder for
hackers to guess. For even greater security, some online services now use “password-plus” systems. In this case,
users first put in a password and then put in a second code that changes after the user accesses the site. Users
either have special cards or devices that show them new code to use the next time. Even if a hacker steals the
password, they won’t have the code. Or if the hacker somehow gets the code, they still don’t know the password.

LIVING IN THE ICE AGE
I’m a scientist and I arrived here in Antarctica three months ago in December. The temperature is cold but not
unpleasant yet. Since arriving, I have worked with about 60 other people getting everything ready for the

We celebrated Earth Day in my city last week. The idea of this special day began in the 1960s when life was
very different. Few people talked or even thought about the environment. Most people had no idea how dirty our
air and water were. This attitude bothered Gaylord Nelson, who was a senator in the US government, and he had
an idea. If people around the world knew that the planet was in danger, they might work harder to save it, so he
just needed to get their attention. The first Earth Day was just in the United States but it led to events every year all

In my town, last Saturday afternoon lots of people rode their bikes from the park, around the town together
