ROAD TO EMMAUS

ST. MARY MAGDALENE
PATRON SAINT:
She was known as a sinner and was possessed by seven
demons. But her many sins were forgiven because she
has shown great love (Luke 7:47). She stood beneath
the cross on Calvary and was the first one to see Jesus
after his resurrection. Magdalene captures for us the
important ingredient of what conversion means
because of the tremendous change in her life and her
capacity to love God and neighbor. The courage of Mary
Magdalene to stand by Jesus also inspires us to stand
by the Church and stand by the community we are
called to love.

WHO DO MEN SAY I AM?

The Prince of the Apostles was a fisherman from
Bethsaida in Galilee. After being called by Jesus, he left
everything to fol low him (Mk 1 17). At Caesarea
Philippt, Jesus changed his name Simon into Peter
(Rock) because he was to be the rock-foundation of the
Church He was constantly on Jesus' side, but nonethe-
less denied him three times. Three times Jesus asked
him to confirm his love for him (Jn 21 15). He went to
preach the Gos pel in Rome where he was crucified
upside down on Vatican Hill during the persecution of
Nero in 64 A.D

THE LITTLE CHURCH:
THE FAMILY

PATRON SAINT:
The Holy Family is composed of our Lord Jesus Christ,
our Mama Mary and St. Joseph, Jesus' foster father We
chose the Holy Family as the patron of this Talk because
as a family, it is the model of a true, a holy, a united
Catholic family. St. Joseph, the head of the family, was a
man of God, God-loving, God-fearing and was therefore
chosen to be guardian of Jesus and the husband of
Mary. Mary, the ever humble handmaid of the Lord,
was a humble and obedient wife so Joseph. Jesus was
the ever obedient and respectful Son He allowed
Himself to be subject to them.

We chose for this Talk St. Monica, the mother of St.
Awaustine, as she was a woman of great suffering. She
suffered much from her pagan husband, Patricius, with
all his pagan ways. She suffered much from her
wayward son, Augustine, who imitated the sinfu! ways
of his father. But she was also a woman of great faith.
She never stopped calling and crying to Gord for the
conversion of her unfaithful husband, and worldly son,
Augustine.

ST. AUGUSTINE OF HIPPO
PATRON SAINT:
St. Augustine is a perfect example of one who resisted
God's call because of obstacles in his life. We chose St.
Augustine as our patron saint in this Talk because he
had to overcome many internal and personal obstacles
(hindrances) in his life before he underwent a true
conversion His biggest obstacle was that of sensuality.
He finally overcame these obstacles through love and
prayers of the members of his church, the bulk of which
came from his mother who later on became a
canonized saint, St. Monica St. Monica was a very pious
woman who prayed for her husband and son day and
night, for their conversion

MARY MOTHER OF THE CHURCH
PATRON SAINT:
Mary our mother has always been an interceding
mother. She has never failed us. True, I can go direct to
the Lord, but also remember that Jesus can never
refuse His mother just like in the wedding in Cana. I
feel that the rosary and the scapular of the Blessed
Mother help drive away impish inclinations. When the
sailing gets rough, call on Mary "Favored daughter of
the Father Mother of the Son Spouse of the Holy Spirit

Little is known about St. Dimas except for the fact that
he was one of the two criminals who was crucified with
Jesus in Mount Calvary He has been called Good Thief
because he is the only person in the Bible who was
assured by Jesus of an immediate entry to heaven
(sainthood) when our Lords said. "This day. you will be
with me in Paradise. A privilege which Jesus did not give
even to one of his disciples.

In the last part of the Apostle's Creed, we profess "I
believe in the Holy Spin., the holy Catholic Church, the
communion of saints. "The communion of saints
pertains not just to the saints in heaven declared by the
Church. They also concern the ordi- nary men and
women past and present. They are moms and dads,
relatives and friends, boys and girls, dedicated singles,
religious, and priests. They are the Catholics who have
made us who we are today because of the good
examples they have shown and the love they have
shared with us while on earth They are as much the
Church as you and I.

CHURCH SPIRITUALITY

St. John of the Cross and St. Teresa of Avila were
declared "Doctors of the Church in the field of
spirituality. St. John of the Cross was a Carmelite monk,
who was the companion and spiritual director of St
Teresa of Avila. While short in stature his spirituality
(literally) has reached the heights of Mt Carmel where
he frequently encountered the Blessed trinity. He was
an excellent director of souls and St. Teresa depended
on his advise regarding the spiritual direction of their
religious Sisters.
ST. JOHN OF THE CROSS
PATRON SAINT:

St Teresa of Avila was also a contemplative Carmelite
Nun who founded a reform branch of Carmel, the
Discalced Carmelites. She was a great teacher of the
Spiritual life even if not highly educated since she was
obviously in frequent contact with God. Her writings are
simple but touching accounts of a soul's spiritual
journey. She was declared a Doctor of Mysticism, rare
for a woman. To understand God's work in the soul you
must read the writings of St. Teresa, Master of the
Spiritual life.

Paul's teachings constitute a large part of the
foundations of the Christian Faith. They also show what
the grace of God can achieve in the hearts of men May
we too become great evangelizers of Jesus, imitating St.
Paul in his courage, his faith and underlying service of
the Church of God.

YOU ARE MY WITNESS

Lorenzo was born in Manila of a Chinese father and a
Filipino mother, both Christians. Thus he learned
Chinese and Tagalog from them, and Spanish from the
Dominicans whom he served as altar boy and sacristan.
He became a professional calligrapher, transcribing
documents in beautiful penmanship. He was a full
member of the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary under
Dominican auspices. He married and had two sons and
a daughter.
